Endodontics
What is Endodontics?
Endodontics is the field of dentistry that is involved with the pulp of teeth. Each of your teeth has an inner pulp that houses the blood supply and nerves responsible for keeping the tooth healthy and strong. When the pulp becomes damaged or infected, treatment is needed to prevent both pain and sensitivity. It is important that you consider endodontic treatment when it comes to eliminating this pain and preventing full removal of the tooth.
Why would Endodontics be needed?
Most commonly endodontic treatment is needed if there is a problem with the pulp of one or more teeth. This might be because the pulp has become infected by decay. In some cases, a pulp is damaged or exposed because a tooth has cracked or broken. Regardless of the problem you’re experiencing, endodontic treatment aims to treat or remove the pulp completely via a root canal.
Who is a candidate for Endodontics?
To determine if you might need endodontic treatment, we will perform an exam and take x-rays. X-rays allow us to see below the surface of your teeth and gums so that we can easily find a problem with the pulp. If you do have an issue with the pulp of one or more of your teeth, it is important to consider quick and effective treatment right away. By having treatment done, you can prevent further damage and possible infection of the pulp and tooth.
What can be expected during Endodontic treatment?
Endodontic treatment involves both root canals and root canal retreatment as needed by the patient. Before any treatment is done, we will perform an exam and take x-rays. This will help us to determine what type of treatment is needed in our office. For root canal therapy, we will remove the pulp completely and fill the canals of the roots with a special medicated material. For retreatment of an already-root canaled tooth, we remove this inner medicated filling and retreat the tooth to remove any remaining pulp matter that might have been left behind. We aim to make the process as easy and quick for you as possible.
